The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Ed. Patch 2.5.8.1 Release Notes
Attention Halcyon Citizens!
All explorers should get Patch 2.5.8.1 the next time they launch The Outer Worlds. You’ll need to have downloaded and installed Patch 2.5.8.1 in order to apply any of the changes and fixes included in Patch 2.5.8.1. That’s just how that works. If you don’t see the patch right away, don’t panic. Even with our best percussive maintenance, it may still take time for the patch to work its way through all the servers and stuff and become available to everyone everywhere.
Here are some of the changes/fixes we’ve been up to in this patch:
Economy Rebalancing
Yes, money is the root of all evil, especially in Halcyon, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Fun evil. Anyway, we’ve done some economy tinkering.
- Addressed macro economic community concerns in early, mid and late game. More Bits in the beginning, more consistent Bits to be found in boxes, lockers, and lockboxes, and some more stuff to spend your Bits on as you go.
- Equipment dropped by enemies is now appropriately used and banged up, presenting wonderful fixer-upper opportunities for the resourceful Engineer - and less buyer’s remorse on that shiny Pristine Assault Rifle you just bought.
- Reworked Tinkering to increase Bit costs based on weapon and armor level instead of the number of times a weapon or armor has been previously Tinkered. Now you can keep your favorite shootin' iron with you for your whole adventure!
- Addressed both economic and usability concerns with Consumables, standardizing costs and extending buffs. Also fixed up all those non-pickupable Consumable pickups you all found strewn about, because that sure was weird.
Unique Item Improvements
We’ve been aware that not all of the Unique weapons and armor in The Outer Worlds have felt terribly… Unique. Well with the power of hindsight (and your many, many complaints and suggestions) we’ve set to change that.
- All Unique weapons, armor and helmets have had a usability and desirability pass. Adjustments were made to stats and abilities of many Unique items, making them generally more useful, fun and, of course, “Unique”!
- All Unique weapons and armor can also now be fully modded by players, except for a permanent “Unique” mod that gives each item its now much more readable Unique qualities.
- All Unique weapons that had just standard damage output have had their base damage increased slightly to make them just that extra bit more special.
- The Tinkering change means that even early-game Unique weapons and armor can remain viable throughout your entire adventure - as long as you keep feeding them your Bits. Delicious, delicious Bits.
New Thrown Grenade Feature
The highly requested feature of Thrown Grenades have come back in time from The Outer Worlds 2 for a limited “early access” release in The Outer Worlds!
- Enjoy blowing your foes to bits with the trio of the destructive Explosive Grenade, highly-corrosive Bio-Mass Grenade, and the chilling Frost Grenade.
- As the hot new items on the market, Grenades are still mid-rollout throughout Halcyon. Visit your friendly weapons vendors or nearly any vending machine to purchase these new devices of destruction!
- Default control schemes have been slightly reconfigured in the style of The Outer Worlds 2 to include a dedicated Grenade Throw input. We certainly didn’t make it a dedicated input just to get you to go buy Grenades.
- The Companion Move, Attack and Follow commands are now combined into one context-sensitive input. We apologize for the convenience.
- For Gamepad, the Emergency Medical Inhaler is now on the D-Pad Down input, as in The Outer Worlds 2. We apologize for the inconvenience.
- Purchased Grenades will appear on the updated Weapon Radial HUD, allowing a quick swap between the Explosive, Bio-Mass, and Frost Grenades, for players who remember how to bring up the Weapon Radial.
- We’ve written new in-game tutorials regarding Grenades and all related changes for additional information, future reference, and/or the occasional chuckle.
Bugfixes
In addition to the larger QOL changes above, we’ve also fixed up some smaller things that had been annoying us, so probably have also been annoying you.
Environments / Levels
- We added an extra 300 Bits along the tutorial path to the Unreliable, but we’re not saying where! (Link)
- Fixed an issue where the player could get stuck inside the Geothermal Power Plant, causing them to slowly go insane with Chester Higgins. (Link)
- Players can no longer clip into the landing at the top of the elevator to the Circus Time Freighter on Scylla, causing them to fall through the elevator. Players can still fall off of the elevator if they aren’t watching where they’re going. (Link Link Link)
- Walking outside of the safety barrier on Scylla will now properly kill you. So stop doing that. We mean it. (Link)
- Added some nice ambient lighting and reflective paint to rocks and bushes in the Monarch Wilderness so things aren’t quite so dark and spooky at night. (Link)
- The UDL Gunship that crash lands during Radio Free Monarch no longer has strange ghostly contrails for weirdos to make conspiracy theories about. (Link)
- There are no longer visible debug strings in most of the terminals in the RR&DD Labs. The typo of “RR&DD Labs” is still quite visible, however. (Link)
- Players can no longer pickpocket NPCs through solid glass no matter how high their Sneak skill is. (Link)
- Players can no longer read Datapads through solid glass no matter how high their Reading skill is. (Link)
- Brought in a mortician to fix the makeup on Hortense Ingalsbee’s corpse in Byzantium to better match her appearance in life. (Link)
- When viewing the Model Needler Gun using the Investigation Board on Eridanos, the Model Needler Gun will actually be there. (Link)
- Fixed up a group of textures across the game that thought they were being funny by spontaneously inverting their color schemes. (Link)
- Removed some floating junk in the Gorgon Overlands. Left all of the junk that properly respected gravity. (Link)
- Fixed issues with shadows in Stellar Bay (Link)
- Addressed an issue where the player would get stuck at the cave entrance in the tutorial area. (Link)
Combat
- Critical Hits with the Prismatic Hammer’s Power Attack no longer deals 0 damage for characters with minimal Intelligence. You can no longer be too dumb to wield a hammer. (Link)
- Fixed an issue with the Flamethrower VFX while in TTD, because time dilation shouldn’t get in the way of one’s pyromania. (Link)
- The Medical Drone with MacRedd’s outlaws in the Back Bays has taken its Hippocratic Oath, and now heals (the outlaws) instead of harms (you). (Link)
- Defeating the Alpha Canid will now properly cause all other Canids at the party to get bored and leave. (Link)
- When loading an autosave created at the start of the Slug Queen boss battle the player no longer gets softlocked. (Link)
- Turret traps can be destroyed with a flamethrower. (Link)
Menus / UI
- The so-called “Competent” Skill Unlocks for Inspiration and Determination are now competently assigned to their correct skills, with Inspiration’s giving the Critical Damage boost and Determination’s granting the Armor bonus. (Link)
- The Paranoid flaw no longer stacks an extra debuff on the Lie skill specifically, and the Extra Paranoid status effect will stop being so “extra” in adding a new stack of its debuff every time you just highlight the Lie skill. (Link)
- Finally added an entry for the “Resolve” buff in the Buffs page in the Codex. We were honestly surprised to find out anyone was using it. (Link)
- Highlighting a status effect on a Companion’s details screen no longer makes the Journal forget how to highlight everything else. (Link)
- We’ve fixed an issue where the performance drops significantly while scrolling through mods, which would sometimes lead to a crash! (Link)
- The "Resolve" Skill buff is now fully visible when viewing the Status Effects section of the Character Details section in the Ledger. (Link)
- Fixed Adaptive Trigger functions on PS5 triggering outside of gameplay. (Link, Link)
- Consumables show their stacked duration appropriately in the Character tab. (Link)
Quests
- Grace Romero no longer conveniently “forgets” about the missing Zoe in A Few Kindred Spirits, even if you talk to her about Adelaide first or convince all the Deserters to go back to Edgewater. (Link Link)
- Choosing to attack the Hacked Mechanical in the Lord of Blight Quest on Eridanos no longer sometimes enrages the entire spaceport. (Link)
- The ‘Shipping Note' that the player is told will be on Ella Tinsley’s desk in Sublight Freight Storage will now be on Ella Tinsley’s desk in Sublight Freight Storage. (Link)
- Jasper Low’s CHEM Lab audio log now plays automatically after you’ve gone through all the trouble of getting the dang thing from him. (Link)
Now we’re certain after all this there are simply no more problems anywhere in the entire game, but if you somehow run into any issues or have suggestions that you just have to share, then you can visit the Technical Support forums for The Outer Worlds. But first, do a search to see if a fellow explorer has already beaten you to the punch. We promise that duplicate threads on a single issue do not magically get it fixed faster. Instead, if you find a thread that already matches your issue or suggestion, leaving a comment there with some additional details might give us that critical intel we need to tackle it.
We appreciate all of you and want to thank you for your continued support, patience, and understanding while we continue to make The Outer Worlds even better. With full sincerity, please continue to share with us any issues you come across and we’ll continue to do our best to address them. We hope you continue to have fun out there, exploring the Halcyon Colony!
